William Littleton Dennis, age 73, died at his home on May 24, 2024, after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Bill is survived by his wife of 44 years, Vereen Andrews Dennis; his daughters, Margaret Williams (Bobby) and Jessica Fleming (Garret); his son Dr. William A. Dennis (Anh) and five grandchildren: Miriam, James and Andrew Williams; Carsten Fleming; and Madeleine Dennis.
Bill was born in Kingstree, South Carolina, the son of LeRoy Edward Dennis and Margaret Mitchum Dennis. He attended Kingstree High School and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Wofford College in 1973. He received his J.D. degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1976 and an LL.M. in Taxation from the New York University School of Law in 1977.
Bill’s legal career was spent almost entirely in Greenville with the same law firm, initially known as Leatherwood, Walker, Todd & Mann and ultimately, due to a merger, as Fox Rothschild. At the time of his retirement he was a senior partner with Fox Rothschild. Bill’s work in the wealth transfer area concerned all aspects of estate, gift and generation-skipping transfer tax planning. He also assisted clients with tax planning opportunities associated with business sales and acquisitions and with employee benefits involving tax-qualified plans.
Bill’s many honors included election as a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel; recognition by Chambers High Net Worth; selection to the “Best Lawyers in America” list for Employee Benefits law and Trusts and Estates; and selection to the Legal Elite list for Tax and Estate law by Greenville Business Magazine.
Bill genuinely enjoyed his work and the many fine people he met in connection with it, but he was equally happy working in his yard so that it was always in pristine condition. He was an especially present and caring dad and a gifted artist who would draw Snoopy in various poses upon the request of family children. Although reserved by nature, Bill had a wonderful sense of humor. He treasured time with his family above all else and particularly loved family get-togethers at the beach and family trips to the magnificent national parks at the Grand Canyon, Zion, the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. At Bill’s wish no services are planned, but those wishing to honor him with a memorial may send a contribution, in the form of a check payable to the National Park Foundation, to Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, c/o the Bill Dennis Family, P.O. Box 527, Greenville SC 29602.
