Robert Andrew Efird, of Greenville, South Carolina, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2024. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia on January 21, 1941, the son of the late Franklin Otho Efird and Margueritta Ellouise Robertson Efird.
Bob attended Norview High School in Norfolk and graduated from Druid Hills High School in Atlanta. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Emory University, where he was a member of Chi Phi fraternity and served as chapter president.
He was an officer in the United States Air Force where he served as a member of the Atlas Missile Crew at Schilling Air Force Base in Salina, Kansas, followed by service with the Minuteman Missile Crew at Grand Forks Air Force Base in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Throughout his career, Robert was a process engineer with Fiber Industries, Celanese Corporation, Hoechst-Celanese, and Mitsubishi Polyester-Films. Bob served as deacon at Shelby Presbyterian Church in Shelby, North Carolina and as elder and Bible teacher at Greenville First Presbyterian Church. He was a skilled woodworker, chess champion, an energetic outdoorsman, and an avid reader.
He was involved in the Boy Scouts of America, earning the distinction of Eagle Scout, and was a member of Order of the Arrow. He served as assistant scoutmaster for the troop at Shelby Presbyterian and as scoutmaster at Greenville First Presbyterian.
Bob is survived by his wife of sixty years, Jessie Frances (Bootsie) Hill Efird, twin daughters, Anne Frances Efird Young and Sarah Margaret Efird, son-in-law, Brian Jeffrey Young, and granddaughters, Elise Hill Decabooter, Claire Margaret Decabooter and Cheyenne McClay Young. He was predeceased by brothers Michael Otho Efird and William Alexander Efird II.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Greenville First Presbyterian Church,Turner Fund.
