Lonnie Gaston Ernst, born on September 8, 1940, in Winters, Texas, peacefully passed away on April 4, 2024, in Greenville, South Carolina, surrounded by his loving family.

Gaston, as he was affectionately known, began his journey in Winters, Texas, where he attended Winters High School and crossed paths with his future wife, Ophelia Dietz. Their love story blossomed, leading to a beautiful 59-year marriage and the creation of a loving family. Settling in San Antonio, Texas, they raised two daughters, Adrianna and Elissa, and welcomed four cherished grandchildren, Brice, Colin, Ava Grace, and Aiden.

Gaston's devotion to education led him to graduate from Texas Tech University and become a beloved American History teacher at Rhodes Middle School. He shared his knowledge and passion with countless students, leaving a lasting impact on their lives.

Together, Gaston and Ophelia embarked on countless adventures, traveling the world and creating cherished memories with their family. They were avid Master Gardeners, pouring their hearts into city and community landscaping projects. Their green thumbs brought life and beauty to their Shavano Park yard, a testament to their love for nurturing nature.

Gaston was adored by his family, friends, neighbors, and the students he taught. His warm smile, gentle spirit, and unwavering kindness touched the lives of all who knew him.

In November 2023, Gaston made the courageous decision to move to Greenville, South Carolina, to be closer to his daughters and grandchildren. In his final months, he embraced every moment, creating special memories and treasuring precious time with his family.

Although Gaston's physical presence may be gone, his legacy of love, kindness, and generosity will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Before his passing, Gaston was reminded he would soon be reunited with his beloved Ophelia. His response was, “It’s about time.” because he had missed her so much in the last two years since she passed away.

Per Gaston’s wishes, no funeral ceremony will be held. Gaston’s and Ophelia’s ashes will be spread together in their favorite locations in nature.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildlife Center or the Texas Tree Foundation, causes close to Gaston's heart.

Rest in peace, dear Gaston. Your spirit will forever shine brightly in our hearts, guiding us with love and fond memories.
