Upstate's top performers at state high school track meets; Mauldin girls relay sets record
Here are Upstate's standouts from the South Carolina high school track and field state championships held this weekend in Columbia.
Mauldin girls relay team breaks state record
Mauldin set a Class AAAAA record in the 4 x 800 girls relay during the SCHSL meet at Spring Valley High School.
Maudin's foursome of Meredith Norris, Reagan Cooke, Callie Rohm and anchor Avery Griffith set the new mark at 9:21.40. In the final stretch run, Griffith passed Ava Kramer of Lexington and the Mavericks won by 1.04 seconds.
Maudlin shaved more than eight seconds off its winning time at the Upper State championships.
Southside Christian runner sweeps three events
Southside Christian junior Grayson Gibbons defended his three state championships in Class A.
Gibbons won the 800 meters in 2:01.03, the 1,600 in 4:38.82 and the 3,200 in 10:07.75. He beat last year’s mark in the 3,200 by more than14 seconds.
Southside Christian took an overwhelming team victory, 162-86, against second-place Whale Branch. Christ Church was third with 80 points.
Southside sprinter leads double-medal winners
Southside senior Ian Johnson kept sprint championships in the family.
Johnson won the 100 and 200 at the Class AAA meet at Lower Richland, sweeping both events just like his older brother, Jalen, did last year.
Ian Johnson took the 100 in 10.48 seconds to beat Corey Steed of Philip Simmons by 0.32 seconds and Amari Acker of Crescent by 0.34 seconds. Johnson’s time was the second-fastest in the state this year, behind only the 10.41 he posted at Upper State. He edged Steed again in the 200, finishing in 21.14 seconds.
Double winners for the girls were Riverside’s Miah Johnson in the 800 (2:14.41) and 1,600 (5:03.3), Westside’s Ayanna Hunt in the shot put (12.2 meters) and discus (44.27 meters) and Alina Uguz of Christ Church in the high jump (1.65 meters) and triple jump (10.25 meters).
