Wofford baseball’s return to the NCAA tournament will be as the No. 3 seed of the Chapel Hill Regional, it was revealed Monday during the selection show.

Wofford (41-18) will open with defending national champion and No. 2 seed LSU (40-21) on Friday (noon, ESPNU). Top-seeded and No. 4 overall seed North Carolina (42-13), the host of the regional, plays Long Island (33-23) on Friday (6 p.m., ESPN+).

The Terriers are in the NCAA tournament and are Southern Conference champions for the first time since 2007 and only the second time in program history. Fifth-seeded Wofford came out of the losers’ bracket and won three straight games, including two Sunday against No. 2 seed Samford, to win the title at Fluor Field in Greenville.

Four-team regionals will take place from May 31 to June 3. The super regionals will be from June 7-10 and the College World Series at in Omaha, Nebraska, will begin June 14 with the championship series from June 22-24.

Three times in the four previous seasons, Wofford had been in the Southern Conference game with two chances to win in the double-elimination event and came up short. This time, the Terriers were on the opposite side and needed to beat Samford twice.

Wofford, which ended the regular season with a pair of wins against Samford, ended the conference tournament the same way and finished 6-1 in the event.

In 2007, Wofford had the worst record (8-19) in the Southern Conference at the end of the regular season, won a play-in game against Furman and then swept through without a loss to win the program’s first championship. The Terriers went to a Regional in Raleigh, North Carolina, and fell to South Carolina as well as host team NC State to finish 30-33.
